There was a little girl named Mary Lynn.
People called her Marilee (it rhymes with Lee and Tree) because she was always very
merry. She danced and sang and talked to the animals in her yard...That's the beginning of a story/song
"Lee, the Magic Tree" my father, Mike Tangi, wrote for me as a child.
I didn't know he'd written a song about me until years later. I'm only
beginning to learn to what extent he wrote songs, jingles, scripts and stories. That's
in addition to his producing and directing TV programs, theatrical productions
and commercials he starred in, telling jokes and stories, and entertaining
everyone on and off camera and stage. He worked at TV stations, ad agencies
and eventually had his own ad business.
What I find interesting about this is that I write too. I write newsletters,
brochures, ad copy, marketing communications, articles and great emails.
I've produced events, promotions, programs and productions. I worked on the
business side of broadcasting and advertising in the 70s and 80s. I own
a marketing business.
I can only recently admit to having starred in one (King Kwik) commercial at
the age of 12 where my big line was "I want an Icee." I once sang and danced
wearing coattails and tights with top hat and cane in my father's well-choreographed
opening act for a charity dance that made people forget they were at the K of C
Hall in Price Hill. I'm definitely not an entertainer, however I can be entertaining.
And, I love to tell stories.
I'm definitely my father's daughter. But, who knew. It's only when we begin to discover
our dads do we actually see the resemblance. I see it in my siblings as well.
Marci's similarities are in her stage presence as an education consultant in the beauty
industry. She definitely has a flair for the dramatic, without the top hat and cane.
Michael occasionally does the hard rock scream in bands and can always be relied on for
a good story of the past. My niece Maria writes poetry and lyrics to songs.
In "Discovering Dad," one thing is certain. I'll know a whole lot more about me.
